This Thursday we’re pouring Laherte Frères, one of the growers who helped make modern Champagne feel less like a house style and more like wine from individual places. Seventh-generation grower Aurélien Laherte works a mosaic of 75 parcels, fermenting and aging most of the wines in old wood and treating different grapes and sites as distinct expressions rather than ingredients in a blend.
We’ve got two particularly fun examples. Rosé de Meunier is 100% Meunier assembled three ways—white-pressed, skin-macerated and as still red wine—while 2019 Les Longues Voyes is a vintage Blanc de Noirs from Pinot Noir grown in the Montagne de Reims, far from Laherte’s home vineyards in Chavot. Two grapes, two very different Champagnes, one of our favorite growers.
